PDP’s Waheed-ur-Rehman Para wins Pulwama seat in J-K Assembly polls

PULWAMA — In a significant result from the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Waheed-ur-Rehman Para of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has secured the Pulwama constituency seat, marking the party’s first victory in this election.

Para garnered 24,716 votes, defeating his main opponent Mohammad Khalil Bhand of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) by a margin of 8,148 votes.

Other candidates in the race included Talat Majid Alie (Independent), who received 1,833 votes, Fayaz Ahmad Sofi (Aam Aadmi Party) with 1,224 votes, and Sofi Mohammad Akbar (Independent), who garnered 1,117 votes.

Additional contenders who fell behind in the contest were Mohd Ayoub Mir (Independent) with 1,052 votes, Mohd Iqbal Sofi (Independent) with 871 votes, Javeed Ahmad Chopan (Independent) with 810 votes, Ishtiyaq Ahmad Sheikh of the Nationalist Congress Party (400 votes), Ali Mohammad Wani (Independent) with 379 votes, Asif Nabi Dar (Independent) with 227 votes, and Shabir Ahmad Wani of the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (207 votes).

The “None of the Above” (NOTA) option was exercised by 1,095 voters.

This victory represents a sort of a milestone for the PDP given the support from youth for Para. However, the party’s overall performance in the election is expected to result in fewer than 10 seats.

Political analysts predict the party may secure no more than five seats. Meanwhile, the counting is still underway.
